The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is a specialist armed police force with a critical national role. Trained to the rigorous standards of the College of Policing, we protect the UK’s licensed civil nuclear sites and ensure the safe transit of civil nuclear material across England and Scotland.

Our people are our greatest strength. Together, we foster a culture of belonging, respect, and support, where every individual is valued for the unique perspective and talent they bring.

United by a shared mission and purpose, we empower one another to succeed, enabling us to deliver exceptional protection for the civil nuclear sector and the communities we serve.

Our Ambition
To be recognised nationally and internationally as the leading organisation for armed policing of critical national infrastructure in the UK.

Our Mission
In partnership with the civil nuclear industry, national security agencies and regulatory bodies, the CNC will deter any attacker whose intent is the theft or sabotage of nuclear material, whether static or in transit. If an attack occurs, the CNC will defend that material and deny access to it. If material is seized or high consequence facilities are compromised, the CNC will recover control of the facility and regain custody of the material.

CNC Inclusive and Engaged
We are committed to creating an open, inclusive culture, where everyone can feel they belong, be themselves and play their part in achieving our mission and ambition. This is reflected in how we actively develop a culture of engagement and inclusivity, promoting belonging and recognising the strengths of a diverse workforce.

Our Values

Our values are built on the College of Policing’s Code of Ethics – the same standards that apply across UK policing. These give everyone at the CNC, at every rank and grade, a clear and consistent set of expectations to work to.

We are proud to deliver high-quality armed policing, protecting the public and keeping the nation’s civil nuclear material safe.

As individuals and as part of a wider organisation, we have a responsibility to act in the best interests of the public. Improving public safety and wellbeing underpins everything we do.

We are dedicated to working in the public interest, listening to people’s needs and concerns and making sure they feel valued, which helps build confidence in the service we provide.

We are always ready to respond, both through our core role and by supporting the UK’s armed surge capability. Remaining ready and agile is a whole team effort.

We are genuine with those we communicate with and endeavour to create trusting relationships. We accept feedback and are comfortable in responding to criticism and finding ways to improve.

We constantly think about how to create the best possible outcomes for those we serve and take personal responsibility for delivering this.

Regardless of background, everyone is equal and has a vital part to play in helping us achieve our ambition. Equality, inclusivity and fairness are at the heart of everything we do.

As a police service, impartiality is fundamental to how we work with colleagues, stakeholders and members of the public. We consider different sides of a situation and ensure that each side is given equal consideration. We do not favour one person or group over another, acknowledging that discrimination increases feelings of unfairness and makes our jobs harder to do.

We do not allow personal feelings, beliefs or opinions to unfairly influence our actions in any situation. We explain our decisions clearly and ensure our actions are fair, transparent and evidence based.

Our strengths lie in armed policing and world-class firearms training. Our ambition is to be recognised nationally and internationally as the UK’s leading provider of Armed Policing Protective Services.

We set clear expectations for professional behaviour and recognise both strong performance and areas for improvement. We uphold the values and ethical standards of the police service in everything we do.

Public confidence, alongside the trust of colleagues and stakeholders is essential to delivering a modern and effective Armed Policing Protective Service.

Code of Ethics

The aim of the Code of Ethics, produced by the College of Policing, is to promote inclusivity and provide each member with direction on promoting and supporting ethical and professional behaviour.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Affinity Networks

Our Affinity Networks give colleagues a space to learn from each other’s cultures and experiences, surface gaps in understanding, and shape ideas that improve our services. They help build a genuinely inclusive culture at the CNC and help us make meaningful change.

Diverse Ability and Wellness Network (DAWN)
DAWN offers colleagues a range of information and support around mental and physical health, disability (including physical and neurodivergent conditions), age-related matters, family support and caring responsibilities.

Faith and Multi-Ethnic Network (FAME)
FAME gives colleagues a range of information and support around religion and race.

Gender Affinity and Inclusion Network (GAIN)
GAIN supports colleagues on gender-related issues and works to promote gender equality across the CNC, helping every employee to reach their full potential, regardless of their gender.

LGBT+ Network
Our LGBT+ network gives colleagues a range of information and support around sexual orientation and gender identity. We’re also proud to be part of the National LGBT+ Police Network, keeping the CNC at the forefront of national developments and helping us support LGBT+ colleagues, while maintaining public confidence in an impartial police service.

Positive Action

We’re committed to representing the communities we serve and firmly believe that embracing different perspectives makes us stronger.

Opportunities are for everyone

No matter your background, every candidate is assessed against the same rigorous standards. Every application, assessment and interview is evaluated fairly, consistently and on merit.

Positive action is about creating opportunities, not lowering standards. It’s about ensuring talented people from all backgrounds can see a place for themselves in policing and have the confidence to take that first step.

By building a diverse, inclusive and forward-thinking workforce, we strengthen our ability to serve the public. When our people reflect the communities they protect, we bring greater understanding, build stronger trust, and create a police service that is more connected, more representative and more effective for everyone.

Our Standards and Commitments

We know trust has to be earned. Like policing across the UK, we’ve looked closely at our culture and taken action to keep improving.

At the CNC, we police by consent, so the way we behave matters just as much as the job we do. We hold ourselves to the highest standards, and expect our people to lead by example – with the public we protect, the industries we work alongside, and with each other. That means being approachable and fair, taking responsibility when we get things wrong, and supporting colleagues to do the right thing, even when it’s difficult.

In recent years, high-profile failings across UK policing have shaken public trust and confidence. As part of the wider police service, the CNC recognises there is work to do to rebuild that trust, and reassure the public that we will act fairly, professionally and honestly. Understanding and strengthening our culture is a priority and we will continue to work together to establish what our culture is and where change is needed.

As part of UK policing, we're committed to having a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and the stakeholder environment we operate within. A truly diverse workforce shows the public that policing is there to serve everyone, and that in turn builds trust. Valuing people as individuals and harnessing our differences is simply the right thing to do.

Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with respect, and no one should face disadvantage or discrimination because of who they are. Diversity in our workforce means people from different backgrounds and personal circumstances bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives, helping us perform better as a team and driving insight, innovation, and improvement. Our EDI Strategy sets out our aims and vision in this area, and how we’ll achieve a fully inclusive workplace for all.

We're proud to have launched our Gender Responsive Policing Strategy, the first of its kind across UK policing.

The strategy sets out our vision for the CNC to be a gender responsive police force with a fully inclusive workforce. We’re committed to embracing all gender identities, practising inclusive behaviours and challenging harmful practices and views that damage both individuals and the organisation as a whole.
